We follow again the account given by Gustave Monod. He dedicated the second chapter of his book La famille Monod (The Monod family, 1890) to the ancestors of his father. You can download it by clicking here. Unfortunately, for the time being, I cannot offer an English translation.
Again, one personality stands out among the others: Gaspard Joël Monod (1717-1782), Jean Monod’s father. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a portrait of this remarkable man, who had been trained as a pastor in Geneva and had later become chaplain of the English governor of Guadeloupe and pastor of the local French Reformed church. He had to leave the island in 1763 when the Treaty of Paris brought it back under French control; he returned to Geneva where he dedicated the rest of his life to literature, and in particular to translations from English to French.
This chapter of Gustave Monod’s book is also interesting because it describes the relationship between the Monod and Puerari families. Those who study the life of the Twelve will indeed often encounter the Pueraris.
